What is CDB (Cannabidiol)?

It's amazing how versatile the extract of a simple plant can have on the human body. Cannabis extract in wellness products has become a trend that is becoming increasingly popular at an incredibly fast pace. There are now a lot of different products that contain CBD: whether chocolate, drinks or creams. Your four-legged friend can also enjoy it. But what is CBD actually?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in the cannabis plant. In fact, CBD is one of more than 100 compounds derived from cannabis plants. This includes the well-known tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In contrast to THC, CBD has no psychoactive effects, ie you do not get "high". Many people use CBD-containing products to relax.

Cannabidiol is a natural hemp extract. Hemp has been used by humans for thousands of years. In ancient times, for example, the plant was used for clothing, marine equipment and ropes, and in the Roman Empire it was used as a medicine for joint diseases. Even today, the plant is used in everyday objects, especially in the construction and textile industries.

What is CBD oil and how is it made?

There are various extraction methods to extract CBD from the female hemp plant. Probably the most used method is based on supercritical CO2 because it is very efficient. At a certain pressure and temperature, CO2 becomes a natural solvent. This is then pumped through the plant, dissolving the desired terpenes and cannabinoids and turning them into an extract.

The extract is then mixed with a carrier oil. This is necessary so that the active ingredients of the hemp plant are absorbed and later easier to use. There are a number of oils that can be used for this, such as hemp seed oil or olive oil. The advantages or disadvantages of using a carrier oil depend on its natural properties.

What is the difference between CBD and THC?

THC and CBD are arguably the best known ingredients found in plants of the cannabis genus. Cannabis is just Latin for hemp. The difference between CBD and THC is very pronounced. While CBD is often used for physical (and mental) wellbeing, THC is responsible for the "high" that is typically associated with grass. Therefore, it is called a psychoactive substance and falls under the Narcotics Act.

In terms of chemical formula, THC and CBD are the same, but differ at the molecular level. That is enough to trigger another effect in the body. Both work directly with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS was discovered by scientists in the 1990s and is a complex network of special receptors and endocannabinoids in the body. These interact with the cannabinoids of the cannabis plant.

The reason why THC has a mind-altering effect but not CBD is because they bind to different cannabinoid receptors. There are two different types of cannabinoid receptors (previously known): CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are in the central nervous system, while CB2 receptors are in the peripheral nervous system.

  • THC reacts with CB1 receptors in the central nervous system, which includes the brain. Because of the connection with them, THC causes a certain mental activity: when the CB1 receptor is activated with THC, it produces a psychoactive effect.
  • CBD binds to CB1 receptors only to a limited extent, if at all, and therefore does not influence perception or sensory sensations. Studies have shown that CBD can even reduce the psychotropic effects of THC when taking THC.

The ECS is worth mentioning because it is integrated into the entire body . It is part of our immune system, our organs, our nervous system - and without any person having to come into contact with cannabis. The work of the ECS stimulates appetite, metabolism, affects immunity, cellular communication and much more. His research hopes to develop new treatments for a variety of diseases.

How does CBD work?

One of the reasons why CBD has become so popular in recent years is the promising therapeutic effects hoped for by CBD. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties . At the moment, however, it is still necessary to research exactly how and for which medical diseases it can be used. Many cite relaxation and pain management as reasons for using CBD.

CBD is also becoming an increasingly important topic in the professional sports world. Since the anti-doping agency removed it from the list of banned substances, it can be used to relax muscles and joints without hesitation. This is also suitable for the “normal” athletes among us who have a few tensions now and then. For this, creams or ointments that contain CBD extract are used more and more .

But back to the real question. CBD interacts and helps regulate the human body's ECS cannabinoid receptors. This system ensures an inner balance in the body. It influences various functions such as blood pressure, sleep, immune reactions, mood and much more. How CBD works depends on the individual. The fact is that it can be a natural remedy.

Try a few products yourself and be ready to experiment. Since CBD has not yet been researched as we all probably hope, it is up to us. Find out which form of CBD is best for you. (I'll tell you what types of products there are.) No matter which product you choose. You should pay attention to what is included. Hemp oil is not the same as CBD oil ( more on this here ).

And how do you take CBD?

With the variety of products, the big question is how to take CBD. There are a couple of different methods that also depend on the product you have. We have listed the most popular ones here:

CBD oil : With a pipette, you can drop the extract under your tongue and hold it there for 1 to 2 minutes. As a result, it is absorbed directly by the oral mucosa and passed on to your bloodstream. If you don't particularly like the taste, you can drop the oil into a smoothie and drink it with pleasure.

CBD creams and ointments : just apply it where the cream should work. Et voila!

frequently asked Questions

In addition to the topics above, there are many other questions that you have asked us over the years. Since there are certainly others who are interested in these answers, we have listed the FAQs here:

hat is the correct dosage for me ?

Research is still ongoing in this area, which is why there is no standard that we can follow. It is best to start with a smaller dose and then increase it. Always pay attention to how you feel! Every body is different, which is why the effects of CBD can also differ greatly. It is advisable to consult a doctor because in some cases drug interactions can also occur.

How do you determine the CBD content?

Since there is still no standard that specifies how manufacturers should indicate the amount of CBD contained, this often leads to confusion among consumers. If you want to know how many milligrams (mg) of CBD there are, just use the following formula.

The example is a 15% CBD bottle with 10ml:

10 ml correspond to * 10 g
10 g = 10,000 mg
15% of 10,000 mg = 1,500 mg

In this example, the bottle contains 1,500 mg of CBD.

(* For the sake of simplicity, let's assume that one milliliter of oil weighs about 1 gram.)

Is CBD legal?

CBD is approved in Germany under certain conditions. As long as no more than 0.2% THC is contained, the products are not covered by the Narcotics Act . In addition, a distinction must be made as to whether it is obtained from CBD from isolates or useful hemp plants. All products sold here at iAmHealth are rigorously checked before being included.

Can I use CBD for animals?

Yes, there is also CBD oil for animals . It is recommended to stick to products that are designed for your four-legged friends. These usually have a taste that animals taste better.

How long is the shelf life of CBD?

If your CBD product is still closed, then you can use the best before date. However, this date is also based on the assumption that you have stored it correctly. So you should read this carefully (or the next question).

When CBD oil is open, it all depends on the carrier oil. Most products should last 1 to 2 years without losing too much effect. How long it lasts depends on the quality and storage of the product.

How do you properly store CBD?

Away from light and warmth, preferably in a dark, cool place. If you have a bottle of CBD oil, it should be stored upright. It is also advisable to make sure that the bottle is closed properly.

If you choose the fridge, this is a good solution. The cold can make the oil a little thicker. In this case, it is enough to warm the bottle a little bit, for example in warm - not hot - water.
